Support & FAQ

Got a question?
Fair enough.

Answers to the most common questions about Bold Choice. If something isn't covered here, the contact link is at the bottom.

Why does Bold Choice need Screen Time access?

Bold Choice uses Apple's Screen Time framework (DeviceActivity) to watch the apps and categories you choose. Without this permission, it has no way to know how long you've been using an app — and therefore no way to roast you when you've been in there too long.

This is the only permission that is strictly required. No Screen Time access means the app cannot function.

Do I have to allow notifications?

No. Notifications are optional. If you skip them, Bold Choice still tracks your usage and logs roast events — you just won't receive real-time alerts when you blow past your limit.

You can enable notifications at any time from iOS Settings → Bold Choice → Notifications.

The app isn't sending me roast notifications. What's wrong?

A few things to check:

1. Make sure notifications are enabled in iOS Settings → Bold Choice → Notifications.

2. Make sure monitoring is active — the dashboard shows "Active" when it's running. If it shows "Paused", tap the card to resume.

3. Make sure you've selected at least one app and set a daily limit.

4. You'll only receive a roast when you've exceeded your limit in the selected apps. If you haven't hit the threshold yet today, there's nothing to send.

How do I change which apps are being monitored?

From the dashboard, tap the gear icon (top right) to open settings. You can update your app selection, change your daily limit, or switch your roast tone from there.

Does Bold Choice collect any of my data?

No. Bold Choice has no backend and no server. Everything it knows about your usage stays on your device. It cannot identify you, does not require an account, and never transmits anything off your phone.

See the full Privacy Policy for details.

Does Bold Choice use push notifications?

No. All notifications are local — they're scheduled and delivered entirely on your device by Apple's notification system. There is no notification server, and no device token is registered anywhere.

Monitoring stopped working after I updated iOS.

iOS updates can occasionally reset Screen Time permissions. Go to the app's dashboard and check if it says monitoring is paused or if there's a warning about Screen Time access. If so, open iOS Settings → Screen Time, make sure it's enabled, then return to Bold Choice and re-grant access from the settings screen.

The roast count or usage data looks wrong.

Usage data comes directly from Apple's Screen Time framework and resets at midnight. If the numbers look off, try pulling down on the dashboard to force a refresh. If the issue persists, a device restart sometimes helps — Apple's DeviceActivity framework can occasionally get stuck after a system update.

I deleted the app. Will my Screen Time data be affected?

No. Deleting Bold Choice removes all app data from your device, but your underlying Screen Time data in iOS is unaffected. Limits set by Bold Choice will be removed automatically when the app is deleted.
